BOSE Speakers

By Jim H

As most of you know Janie and I picked up a red 1990 roadster with a 6 speed the end of November. WHAT A CHANGE FROM THE 75!!! Anyway the car is in excellent shape however; only one of the stereo speakers worked; and that is totally unacceptable! I thought that I could just replace the speakers but quickly found out you can only use Bose Amps and speakers with a Bose system and no one carries them locally. Corvette Central will replace them as a set at $179.00 per unit (speaker and amp). That’s over $500.00 just for the 3 speakers and small Amps!! Sorry but I have a hard time spending that much money on a car stereo system. The alternative is to spend around $1000.00+ on an entirely new system for the car; which is an equally unattractive prospect. I decided to check the Bose Web site (http://bose.com/c_care/product/?) to see if they would have a more reasonable approach. Low and behold, they will repair each unit at $75.00 regardless of weather the Speaker, Amp, or both are defective; and that includes the return postage! Their phone number is 1-800-367-4008; they will ask for the year and type of your car and will send you labels for your shipping box. The only thing that I did not like is when you talk to them they want your credit card number up front for the repairs. Anyway I managed to make one of our rear units work by using parts from both to repair one so I only had to send a front and a rear in for repair.

This means you will have to remove your defective units yourself, but this turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. The rear is just removing the screws that hold the cover on and 6 screws that hold the assembly into the body. To remove the front you remove two screws from the plastic cover on the back for the door jam, and two screws on the bottom of the door jam and the jam cover itself will pivot right out. Now remove the screws that hold the unit in. One last thing, be sure and separate the connectors for the wires before you pull too hard.

We just received the repaired units and now we have MUSIC!!!!!! So far we are very satisfied with the results; the hardest part was waiting the 4-6 weeks for them to return. So if you want to keep your Vette original this seems to be the best bet for your money.

Good Luck Jim H.
