CAGS Bypass Harness Installation

By Howard S

The C4 and C5 six speed manual transmissions will force you to shift from 1st to 4th if you accelerate slowly and shift at a set speed range. This is done to improve corporate fuel average, but can be very annoying. A CAGS bypass harness is available from suppliers such as Eckler’s and Mid America.

Installation is very easy and takes only 15 minutes or so. These photos are from our ’96. The C5 installation was similar.

1.         As always, when working under you car, support it securely on jack stands.

2.         The CAGS connection is gray colored and located on the left side of the transmission. Gently lift the locking clip and separate the connection. (Photo 1)

3.         There are two connection pieces in the kit. One part plugs into the forward harness connector, and the other into the aft connector.

4.         The kit also includes several wire zip ties. Use them to secure the plugs to the existing wire harness. (Photo 2)

That’s all there is to it. Now, when you’re stuck in traffic and moving slowly, you can shift from 1st to 2nd at any speed or acceleration rate.
